Key Stage 1

What are we learning this term?

Year 1 English

English in Year 1 will be taught using a new format, alternating between focused grammar lessons and a session of independent writing, in which they use the taught grammar skills. We will focus on using full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks and question marks accurately when writing sentences. Also, we develop the use of conjunctions such as and to extend sentences and add detail to their writing. English lessons, where possible, will be linked to our current Topic, but we aim to follow the children's interests to make writing as engaging as possible.

Teachers in Year 1 will continue to follow the 'Letters and Sounds' document to deliver phonics to the children, in preparation for the Phonics Screening Tests in early June. This coupled with our reading skills sessions will teach the children to become fluent and independent readers.

Year 2 English

Year 2 will be focussing on consolidating Year 1 grammar and punctuation as well as introducing new grammar, punctuations and spelling that is taught in year 2. In grammar we will be looking at common and proper nouns, expanded noun phrases, subordinating and co-ordinating conjunctions, verbs and contractions, using suffixes and the 4 different types of sentences (statement, question, command and exclamation marks to add interest to our work. Within spellings we will be looking at spelling the Year 2 common exception words as well as following several spelling rules that involve silent letters and homophones.

Year 1 Maths

During the Spring term we will look at reading and writing times to the nearest half and full hour on an analogue clock. We will revisit place value by reading a writing numbers and counting backwards and forwards within numbers to 40. Children will add and subtract 1 and 2 digit numbers to 20, including 0; reading, writing and interpreting mathematical statements involving addition, subtraction and equals signs; solving one step problems using addition and subtraction including missing number problems. We will measure and compare length and height by comparison and by using nonstandard and standard units of measure. This term we will also begin to solve multiplication calculations through the use of arrays, developing the skills of counting on in steps on 2, 5 and 10. Children will also start to look at fractions of shape and number.

Year 2 Maths

Within the first half term we will be focussing on the number system looking at writing numbers in numerals and words, representing numbers using base 10 and counting in two, threes, fives and tens. We will also be focussing on place value where we will understand the value of digits in a number and various ways we can create a number. This will lead into learning addition and subtraction, using whole part models and bar models to help us solve missing number addition and subtractions. We will also learn how to set out our calculations using the column method.

Year 1 Topic

During the Spring term our topic will be "Memory Box". As part of this topic the children will explore historical events that have happened in living memory, look at how technology and transportation have changed and developed and the reasons behind these changes. They will also learn about the life of a child and how that has changed through time.

During the Summer term our topic will be 'Paws, Claws and Whiskers' which will focus on big cats. We will explore the habitats of these animals and look at the different factors resulting in their life in captivity. We will also look at food chains, habitats, the difference between herbivorous and carnivorous animals and the different bone structure of these animals

Year 2 Topic

This half term our topic is called 'Wriggle and Crawl'. We will be looking at the various different mini-beasts there are hiding in our gardens. We will be classifying the different types of mini-beasts and why bees might be the most important mini beast there is. As part of our topic we will also be looking at designing bug hotels, de-bugging computer programs and creating algorithms to design a new mini beast. There will also be a chance for us to create some artwork looking at some pencil sketches of mini-beasts as well as using symmetry to create beautifully symmetrical butterflies.

Physical Education

Year 1 P.E is on Thursday afternoon

Year 2 P.E is on Monday afternoon

Homework

Please read at home with your child on a regular basis and complete the reading section of their diaries accordingly.

Year 1 children will be given weekly spellings on a Friday.

Year 2 children will be given weekly spellings on a Friday. They also will need to learn the times tables. From time to time they may be given homework that is individual to them and reinforces what we have done in class.
